Alaska Highway West local area planning

The Government of Yukon and Champagne and Aishihik First Nations have commenced a cooperative local area planning process for an area along the Alaska Highway from Ibex Valley towards Haines Junction. The plan will be developed with the assistance of a Steering Committee made up of area residents and First Nation citizens.

The planning area is along the Alaska Highway. The area extends from Ibex Valley to Haines Junction.

Call for Expression of Interest

The Yukon government is seeking individuals interested in serving on the Steering Committee that will assist in developing a draft local area plan for the area. The committee will include three members appointed by the Yukon government, and three members appointed by the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations.

We would like to hear from you if you have:

  • an interest in public planning processes and future use of the area;
  • a familiarity with the land use issues and interests in the area;
  • an ability to represent the larger interests of the community in a fair, objective and equitable manner; and
  • a willingness to make time to participate in the 2-year planning process.

The submission deadline is August 30, 2024. 

 

In January 2023, the Government of Yukon and Champagne and Aishihik First Nations hired Stantec Consulting to prepare a background report for Phase 1 of the planning process.

 

In the fall of 2020 the Memorandum of Understanding for the process was updated.

Who’s on the steering committee?

The committee will include three members appointed by the Yukon government, and three members appointed by the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations.
