Fines and demerit points for speeding

When you get a speeding ticket, you'll have demerit points added to your driving record and you'll also have to pay fines.

The steps for paying these fines will be listed on the speeding ticket.

Speeding offence penalties

  • Driving at an unreasonable speed: $125, 4 demerit points.
  • Exceed general maximum speed limit by not more than 15 kilometres per hour: $50, 2 demerit points.
  • Exceed general maximum speed limit by more than 15 kilometres per hour, but not more than 30 kilometres per hour: $100, 3 demerit points.
  • Exceed general maximum speed limit by more than 30 kilometres per hour, but not more than 50 kilometres per hour: $150, 4 demerit points.
  • Exceed general maximum speed limit by more than 50 kilometres per hour: $200, 6 demerit points.
  • Exceed posted speed limit by not more than 15 kilometres per hour: $50, 2 demerit points.
  • Exceed posted speed limit by more than 15 kilometres per hour, but not more than 30 kilometres per hour: $100, 3 demerit points.
  • Exceed posted speed limit by more than 30 kilometres per hour, but not more than 50 kilometres per hour: $150, 4 demerit points.
  • Exceed posted speed limit by more than 50 kilometres per hour: $200, 6 demerit points.

Playground or school zone penalties

  • Exceed posted speed limit in playground or school zone by not more than 15 kilometres per hour: $50, 3 demerit points.
  • Exceed posted speed limit in playground or school zone by more than 15 kilometres per hour, but not more than 30 kilometres per hour: $100, 4 demerit points.
  • Exceed posted speed limit in playground or school zone by more than 30 kilometres per hour, but not more than 50 kilometres per hour: $150, 5 demerit points.
  • Exceed posted speed limit in playground or school zone by more than 50 kilometres per hour: $200, 6 demerit points.
