Statement from Minister Jeanie McLean on Women’s History Month

Minister responsible for the Women and Gender Equity Directorate Jeanie McLean has issued the following statement:

“As the Yukon Minister responsible for the Women and Gender Equity Directorate, I am proud to recognize Women’s History Month in Canada and the Yukon this October.

“Established in 1992 the Government of Canada officially designated October as a time to honour the contributions women have made throughout our country’s history. It is an opportunity to celebrate women’s remarkable achievements and acknowledge the historic and ongoing struggles they have faced. It is a time for us all to celebrate the vital role women have played in shaping our society.

“In the Yukon, women have played a pivotal part in our territory’s history and they continue to make a positive impact in our communities. From First Nations matriarchs – who are integral to the fabric of our communities – to elected leaders, business owners, caregivers and newcomers, Yukon women have consistently demonstrated strength and determination.

“This year, the theme Women at Work: Economic Growth Past, Present and Future, highlights the essential role women play in our economy. Women’s labour has always been essential – though often it has gone unrecognized, undervalued and often unpaid.

“Today, women’s participation in the workforce not only fosters economic growth, but also leads to innovation and diverse perspectives that strengthen our economy. Through the Economic Development Fund, we are pleased to have supported, and continue to support, many women entrepreneurs, and take pride in their invaluable contributions to the overall success and growth of Yukon’s economy. We also provide funding to organizations like Yukonstruct, who host women-focused events, and like Yukon University Innovation & Entrepreneurship, one of whose objectives is to ensure that their clients are representative of the Yukon population, which includes gender.

“As we celebrate Women’s History Month, let us reflect on our past and advocate for a future where the contributions of all Yukon women are valued and their dignity and justice are upheld.”
