Minister for Health and Social Services Tracy-Anne McPhee has issued the following statement:
"Today, on National Seniors Day, we celebrate the invaluable contributions of our Seniors and Elders. They have shaped our communities, built our families and laid the foundation for a better future for all of us.
“Our government is committed to supporting their wellbeing through a range of services that help Yukoners age with dignity, independence and security.
“Our Aging in Place Action Plan is a cornerstone of this commitment. We are focused on helping Seniors and Elders remain in their homes and communities for as long as possible, where they feel most comfortable and connected. This includes offering person-centered care that addresses individual needs and working closely with families to find solutions that work for them.
“As our Senior and Elder population in the Yukon is projected to grow by 110 per cent by 2045, the demand for services will rise. We are committed to expanding and enhancing the programs that support them, with a focus on long-term care, community engagement and health and wellness.
“To further support the growing need for long-term care, we recently created 12 long-term care rooms at Whistle Bend Place to accommodate the move of 10 residents from Thomson Centre and open two new long-term care rooms. This expansion helps more Yukoners access the care they need in a safe and supportive environment.
“Our long-term care homes deliver a range of culturally enriching activities, including monthly feasts, sewing circles, traditional arts and crafts and tea and bannock socials. In the past year, we have seen remarkable achievements, including the successful Bannock Bake-off competition, the introduction of a language program in collaboration with the Yukon Native Learning Centre and a new wood carving program.
“Our government is proud to support key organizations that improve the lives of Seniors and Elders across the territory. The Yukon Council on Aging, Hospice Yukon, Alzheimer Society of British Columbia, the Golden Age Society, l’Association franco-yukonnaise, St. Elias Seniors Society in Haines Junction and the Signpost Seniors Association in Watson Lake provide critical services ranging from information resources and bereavement support to recreational activities and health services. Additionally, the Line of Life Association offers 24/7 personal response services to ensure Seniors have access to immediate assistance in emergencies.
“Beyond these programs, our government continues to support initiatives like Meals on Wheels, which helps ensure that Yukoners have access to nutritious meals, and dementia care programs that provide specialized support for those living with cognitive impairments.
“As we celebrate National Seniors Day, we reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that our Seniors and Elders have the resources, care and respect they deserve. These programs, and many others, help us build a community where aging is met with dignity, support and opportunity.”
