Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:
“In Canada, October provides an opportunity to recognize Canadian Islamic History Month. Throughout this month, we honour the diverse histories, cultures and achievements of the Muslim Canadian community, which has played an integral role in shaping Canada's identity, as well as our identity here in the Yukon.
“Established in 2007, Canadian Islamic History Month aims to promote understanding, appreciation and awareness of the diverse experiences and contributions of Canada’s large and diverse Muslim communities. This year’s theme, Health & Healing, shines a spotlight on the extraordinary contributions of Muslim scholars and scientists in the field of medicine – advances that continue to impact our lives and improve global health today.
“The Yukon is home to a vibrant Muslim community. With about 150 members, the Yukon Muslim Society plays a significant role reflecting the diversity and strength of our territory. Comprising individuals from various ethnicities and backgrounds, this non-profit organization enriches our community and operates the Yukon’s first-ever Masjid – mosque. Working cross-culturally with other faith and community groups to advocate for peace, acceptance and inclusion, the society’s dedication to service and support is a powerful example of the welcoming, diverse society we are building in the Yukon.
“Canadian Islamic History Month serves as a platform for dialogue and engagement, respect and inclusion in Canada’s multicultural landscape. It is a time to reflect on the achievements and contributions of Muslim Canadians and to ask ourselves what we can do to combat intolerance and Islamophobia.
“Let us celebrate Canadian Islamic History Month with a renewed commitment to fostering understanding, unity and appreciation for people of all faiths and work towards building a Yukon that is even more inclusive, welcoming, and appreciative of diversity.
“Happy Canadian Islamic History Month, Yukon.”
