Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:
“It is with great sadness that I mark the passing of beloved Elder Patrick James.
“Mr. James was a former Chief of Carcross/Tagish First Nation who was involved in negotiating the Self-Government Agreement and championed the recovery of the Southern Lakes caribou over 30 years ago.
“He was a well-respected community member who kept an ever-watchful eye on the land, water and wildlife. He was actively involved in land management matters as a previous member of the Yukon Land Use Planning Council and most recently the co-chair of Carcross/Tagish First Nation’s Land Management Board.
“Mr. James’s tireless work and contributions over the decades became the foundation for current approaches to land and natural resources management in the Southern Lakes area. His own words sum-up his philosophy and drive: 'Wise planning of finite land, water and wildlife for the next seven generations is a paramount requirement today, for there will be nothing left if we don’t do this now.'
“As a local business owner, Mr. James ran boat charters where he would share local historical knowledge while shuttling Chilkoot hikers. Most recently, he was part of the Elders Council and was sharing his wisdom and experiences with local youth.
“Mr. James touched many lives and deeply cared for his people and community. On behalf of the Government of Yukon, I extend the Yukon’s heartfelt condolences to Mr. James’s family and friends and the community of Carcross/Tagish First Nation.”
