Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:
"It is with a heavy heart that I join Yukoners in mourning the passing of Joseph Novak, a man whose life was defined by service, generosity and unwavering dedication to both his community and country.
"Lance Corporal Novak, retired, enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces in 1943 at nearly 20 years old. He volunteered for active general service with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps. After being stationed in England, he landed in Normandy, France following the historic D-Day invasion. From there, he continued with the First Canadian Army Corps onward to Antwerp, Belgium, from September to November 1944, before going to Breda, Netherlands.
"For his courage and dedicated service to Canada, Joseph has been honoured with numerous awards and distinctions. In 2021, he was knighted into the French National Order of the Legion of Honour, an esteemed order founded by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802. This prestigious accolade stands as France's highest form of recognition.
"Joseph’s s remarkable legacy extends far beyond his military service. In an extraordinary act of generosity, he donated over one million dollars to the Yukon Hospital Foundation, or as he humbly called it, “payback” for the care he and his family were given. His generous donation helped the hospital purchase a new mammography unit and support mental health, benefiting Yukoners for generations to come.
"Additionally, Joseph donated $150,000 to Yukon University to establish a bursary supporting Indigenous students studying communications. His belief in the power of education and his commitment to supporting future generations were reflected in this thoughtful act of kindness.
"As we reflect on Joseph’s legacy, we are reminded of his selflessness, his unwavering sense of duty and his immense contributions to both Canada and the Yukon. His story is one of courage, compassion and commitment to the greater good. He will forever be a source of inspiration to us all.
"On behalf of the Government of Yukon, I offer my deepest condolences to Joseph’s family, friends and those close to him. He will always be remembered and dearly missed."
