Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:
"This evening at sunset, the Jewish community in the Yukon will join with Jewish communities across Canada and around the world to celebrate Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.
“Rosh Hashanah marks the beginning of the 10-day High Holy Days, culminating in Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. It’s a time of deep reflection and a moment to look back on the past year, seek forgiveness and prepare for the year ahead with hope and renewal.
“Falling on the first and second days of the Hebrew month of Tishri, this year’s Rosh Hashanah ushers in the year 5785 on the Hebrew calendar. Families, friends and communities will come together to pray, enjoy apples dipped in honey and round challah, sound the shofar and extend their heartfelt wishes for a sweet new year.
“The Jewish community in Whitehorse, represented by the Jewish Cultural Society of Yukon, will gather together this evening to pray, share a celebratory meal and sound the shofar. I want to wish them and all who observe Rosh Hashanah a joyful and meaningful new year.
“L’shana Tova U’metukah!”
