Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:
“As Thanksgiving approaches, we reflect upon this time for gathering, contemplation and gratitude. As we come together with loved ones, it is important that we, as Yukoners, take time to understand the deeper historical context of this holiday, particularly in relation to First Nations Peoples.
“Thanksgiving carries a complex history that involves displacement, resilience and the cultural survival of Indigenous peoples in the face of colonization. As we gather, let us pause to recognize and honour the history of the land and the First Nations who have called it home for millennia.
“Thanksgiving is not only an opportunity to give thanks for the abundance in our lives, but also to acknowledge the rich contributions of First Nations communities that enrich our lives in the Yukon.
“As we enjoy our meals and time with friends and family, let us also reflect on how we can support Indigenous voices and initiatives, and foster understanding and reconciliation.
“May Thanksgiving inspire us to connect more deeply with one another, appreciate our shared history and commit to a future where all our communities can thrive together.
“Wishing everyone a Thanksgiving filled with warmth, reflection and joy.”
