About Government of Yukon backcountry campgrounds and recreation sites
We maintain 12 backcountry campgrounds, 2 backcountry day-use areas and 1 cabin accommodation. These sites have limited facilities and can be accessed by foot, air or water.
- Fort Selkirk Historic Site
- Herschel Island – Qikiqtaruk
- Thirty Mile – Yukon River (6 backcountry campgrounds, visible from the river: Lower Laberge, US Bend Island(2), The Slough, Two Woodpecker Point and Hootalinqua; one day-use recreation area: Shipyard Island)
- Tombstone Territorial Parks – 3 backcountry campgrounds:
- Coal River Springs Territorial Park – 1 day-use/camping area
- Ni'iinlii Njik (Fishing Branch) Territorial Park – basic cabins for bear viewing partnership
Camping season
Camping season for backcountry sites is generally late June to mid-September, subject to terrain, wildlife and weather conditions. Some may be accessible in winter. Special restrictions apply for the Tombstone backcountry sites.
Reservations, registrations and permits
- You need to make an online reservation to secure a site at the 3 backcountry campgrounds in Tombstone Territorial Park.
- Registration is required for Herschel Island–Qikiqtaruk and the 3 Tombstone backcountry campgrounds.
- Park permits are required to land any aircraft at any Yukon park, including those listed above.
