Statement from Minister McLean on World Teachers’ Day

Minister of Education Jeanie McLean has issued the following statement:

“We celebrate the work of educators every day, but especially today on World Teachers’ Day.

"October 5 marks the anniversary of the Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). This recommendation sets essential standards for teachers’ rights, responsibilities and professional development.

“This year’s UNESCO’s theme, Valuing Teacher Voices: Towards a New Social Contract for Education, underscores the importance of listening to teachers and learning from their insights, which shape the future of education. As we celebrate educators’ contributions to educational progress, we must also acknowledge the challenges they encounter in moving our systems forward. It is essential to value their voices when developing policies and guidelines that influence their profession.

“Our government remains dedicated to listening to educators and lifting them up, individually and collectively. Your voices are vital to creating an educational system where students and teachers can grow and thrive. This year, we honoured the Individual Learning Centre’s dedicated team of educators with the Yukon 125 medal. This team was recognized for their leadership and helping many students achieve their high school education and move on to achieve their goals. This is one of many teams and educators that were awarded 125 medals for their outstanding work in our communities.

“Educators in the Yukon play a key role in reimagining our education system. One example is the participation of front-line school-based staff in the Communities of Inquiry, which focused on inclusive and special education in the Yukon. These collaborations are critical in driving meaningful, inclusive change from the start.

“As we work to improve inclusive practices and support for all students, we hold our hands up to Yukon educators for their valuable contributions.

“I am continually inspired and humbled by the innovation and dedication of our teachers, Yukon First Nation Language Teachers, educational assistants, administrators and school staff.
