In general, you’re not required to have journeyperson certification to work in Yukon. There are no compulsory trades in Yukon. The apprenticeship office processes Certificates of Qualification under the Apprenticeship and Trades Qualification Act.
Why get certified in your trade?

- It allows you to work anywhere in Canada.
- You can train apprentices in your trade.
What if my trade is regulated in Yukon?
Several trades are required to follow additional regulations in Yukon. You may be required to get a Yukon Certificate of Qualification as part of the licensing process.
These include, but may not be limited to:
- electrician (construction and industrial);
- gasfitter; and
- oil-burner mechanic.

Cost to register for a Certificate of Qualification
To apply, there is a non-refundable $15 application fee.
Eligibility
- You're a certified journeyperson from another province or territory; or
- You've worked in a trade for at least 6 years outside of an apprenticeship and without a certification depending on the trade. You may be eligible to challenge the Certificate of Qualification exam in your trade.
How can I get certified in my trade?
There are 2 routes to get your Certificate of Qualification in Yukon. This is also known as a journeyperson certificate or a ticket.
- Trades Qualifier (with or without a ticket or certificate)
- Apprenticeship
- You’ll receive a Certificate of Qualification upon completing your apprenticeship program.
You already have your journeyperson ticket or certificate
You can get a Yukon Certificate of Qualification from our office based on your certificate from another jurisdiction. This isn’t a requirement. Chapter 7 of the Federal Labour Mobility protects Canadians. You can work in any jurisdiction in Canada, with or without a red seal endorsement. You can only have a Red Seal endorsement in 1 jurisdiction.
How to apply
- Download and complete the Application for examination for the Certificate of Qualification form
- Provide copies of any trade qualification certificates or training certificates you have earned. Our office will verify and may ask for more information on your submission. This includes:
- journeyperson certification;
- issuing province or territory;
- your journeyperson trade number; and
- the date you earned it.
- Pay a non-refundable application fee of $15. We accept cash, cheque, debit or visa. We’ll process your payment at the front desk at the Department of Education building.
- Submit your application:
- Application for Yukon Trades Certificate of Qualification form;
- copies of additional information to support your application; and
- your payment of $15 for the application fee.

When will you find out about your application?
Once we have verified your credentials, we will issue a Certificate of Qualification. We’ll mail your Certificate of Qualification within 2 to 3 weeks. If you need it sooner, we can produce a letter with your journeyperson numbers on it.
You have extensive work experience in a trade
You can challenge the Certificate of Qualification exam. To do this you must have 1.5 times the amount of experience of the apprenticeship requirement in your trade. For example, 6-years’ work experience for a 4-year program.

- Provide copies of supporting documents. Our office may ask for more information upon the review of your submission. Documents include:
- résumé;
- record of employment;
- invoices;
- tax information; and
- reference letters.
- Pay a non-refundable application fee of $15. We accept cash, cheque, debit or visa. We’ll process your payment at the front desk at the Department of Education building.
- Put together your application.
- Application for Yukon Trades Certificate of Qualification form;
- Trade Experience Verification Form(s) if applicable;
- copies of additional information to support your application; and
- your payment of $15 for the application fee.

When will you find out about your application?
Our office will verify your experience and process your application. This can take 1 to 6 weeks. We’ll contact you by email with any questions or if we need any additional information.
We’ll then schedule you for an exam(s) or an interprovincial exam for your Red Seal endorsement. The written exam(s) will be at our office and the practical exam will be arranged by us.

If you're required to, you’ll complete a written exam at our office at the Department of Education building.
Exam sittings are the 1st Monday of every month with a maximum of 12 people at once. The exam takes approximately 3 to 4 hours to complete. There are 100 to 150 questions.
Next steps after your exam
It will take 1 week to 10 days to mark exams. An Industrial Training Consultant will contact you with your results.
If you pass the exam
A Certificate of Qualification will be issued to successful applicants. We’ll mail the certificate within 2 to 3 weeks. If you require it sooner, we can produce a letter with your journeyperson number on it.
If you don’t pass the exam
You can choose to re-write the exam a 2nd time. For the 3rd attempt, you must be approved by the director before taking the exam. If unsuccessful, the applicant must get more training.
