What is Team Yukon?

Team Yukon represents the Yukon at all major games in Canada. A new Team Yukon comes together for each games event. The team is made up of athletes, coaches and support staff.

What is the Government of Yukon’s role?

We're a major funder of Team Yukon at all major games. We also help organize and administer these games. Partner organizations often support us with the administration of the games. Which organizations we work with depends on which games Team Yukon attends.

Major games

Major games are large, multi-sport events for amateur athletes held on a regular basis. Team Yukon participates in 5 major games.

Arctic Winter Games

The next Arctic Winter Games will take place in Alaska, from March 10 to 16, 2024.

• The Government of Yukon is the main funder and organizer of Team Yukon at the Arctic Winter Games.
• Sport governing bodies and Sport Yukon provide support with organization and administration.
• The Arctic Winter Games are held every 2 years.
• Participants come from Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Alaska, Northern Alberta, Russia, Greenland, Norway, Sweden, Finland and the Yukon.

Canada Games

The last Canada Winter Games took place February 18 to March 5, 2023, in Prince Edward Island.

The next Canada Summer Games will take place in St. John's, Newfoundland in 2025. 

• The Government of Yukon is the main funder and organizer of Team Yukon at the Canada Games.
• Sport governing bodies and Sport Yukon provide support with organizing and administration.
• These games run on a 4-year cycle.
• Every 2 years, there's either a summer or a winter games.
• Participants come from every province and territory.

Team Yukon 2023 Canada Winter Games

Canada 55+ Games

The next games take place in Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, in 2024.

• The ElderActive Recreation Association leads the organization of Team Yukon at the Canada 55+ Games.
• The Government of Yukon provides funding and offers some additional support.
• These games are held every 2 years.
• Participants must be 55 years of age and older.
• All provinces and territories are eligible to compete.

North American Indigenous Games

The last North American Indigenous Games took place July 15 to July 23, 2023, in Kjipuktuk (Halifax) and Millbrook First Nation, Nova Scotia.

• The Yukon Aboriginal Sport Circle leads the organization of Team Yukon at the North American Indigenous Games.
• The Government of Yukon provides funding and offered some support.
• Sport governing bodies also provides some support.
• These games are held every 4 years.
• Participants must be of Indigenous ancestry.
• Participants from Canada and the United States are eligible to compete.

Special Olympics

• Special Olympics Yukon leads the organization of Team Yukon at the Special Olympics.
• The Government of Yukon provides funding and offers some administrative support.
• The games are held every 2 years, alternating between summer and winter sports.
