Canada Student Grant for Students with Permanent Disabilities

Eligibility

You must have a persistent or prolonged disability. That restricts your ability to perform daily activities necessary to take part in:

  • studies at a post-secondary school level; or
  • in the labour force.

Your functional limitation can be caused by a:

  • physical impairment; or
  • mental impairment.

You will need to provide proof of your persistent or prolonged disability with 1 of the following:

  • a medical certificate; or
  • a psycho-educational assessment; or
  • documentation proving receipt of federal or provincial persistent or prolonged disability assistance.

How much money is available?

$2,800 per loan year.

Canada Student Grant for Services and Equipment for Students with Permanent Disabilities

This grant is intended to help with exceptional education-related services or equipment costs, such as:

  • specialized tutors;
  • note takers;
  • Braille products; or
  • voice-recognition software.

Eligibility

Meet all of the criteria for the Grant for Students with Permanent Disabilities.

You need specific services and/or equipment. You have to provide written confirmation of this from:

  • a representative at your institution; or
  • your doctor; or
  • another medical professional.

Depending on the type of disability, more information may be needed. At the end of your school year, you will have to provide receipts for all approved costs.

How much money is available?

Up to $20,000 per loan year.

Apply

  1. Apply for a Canada Student Loan or Grant either part-time or full-time.
  2. To apply for both grants, download the Schedule D Canada Student Loan Application for Grants for Students with Permanent Disabilities.
  3. Complete the application.
  4. Submit your application. In person: Education Building (entrance to parking on Hospital Road), 1000 Lewes Boulevard in Whitehorse. We’re open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

When will you find out about your grant application?

Processing a grant can take up to 8 weeks. This can be longer if you are going to an institution outside Canada. You will receive a letter in the mail.
