The Yukon Review Board (the Board) is established by the Criminal Code of Canada under part XX.1, and is a separate, independent tribunal from the court. The Board receives referrals from the court of individuals that have been criminally charged, but found:
- either unfit to stand trial; or
- not criminally responsible on account of a mental disorder.
The board’s primary responsibility is to protect both the rights and freedoms of its clients and the safety of the public.
The board holds hearings and has the authority to issue dispositions or orders which are designed to:
- help the client become fit to stand trial in the case of unfit to stand trial; and
- support the client’s rehabilitation and reintegration into society in the case of not criminally responsible.
Referred clients remain under the jurisdiction of the board until they are referred back to the court. Dispositions of the board may be appealed to the Court of Appeal of Yukon.
How do you become a member of the Yukon Review Board?
You can visit Boards and Committees for more information about the Yukon Review Board and how to apply to be a member.
