• The inmate submits a list of visitors.

Get approval to visit an inmate

If you live in Whitehorse

1. As an approved visitor, go in person: Whitehorse Correctional Centre, 25 College Road in Whitehorse. Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except on statutory holidays.
2. Fill out a Visitor Application Form.

If you live outside Whitehorse

1. Download Visitor Application Form.

Book a time to visit an inmate

To book a visit, you must phone Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., and at least 24 hours in advance.

Visiting male inmates

• Saturday, Sunday and holidays
  • 3:15 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.
  • 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.
     
• Weekdays
  • 3:15 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.
  • 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

All visitors are asked to arrive 15 minutes before their visit.

Visiting female inmates

• Saturday, Sunday and holidays
  • 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
  • 5:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m.
     
• Weekdays
  • 5:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m.

All visitors are asked to arrive 15 minutes before their visit.

What to bring to your visit

You'll need government-issued photo ID.

What to do when you arrive

1. Go to the correctional centre.
2. Sign-in at the reception desk.

What to expect

All visitors will be:

• screened for security clearance; and
• searched; or
• scanned.

Visits to the inmate can be:

• open; or
• secure with a physical barrier.

Follow the correctional officer's directions or instructions at all times.

Can you touch the inmate?

• You can briefly embrace at:
  • the beginning; and
  • the end of the visit.

What isn't allowed

• Mouth-to-mouth contact.
• After you greet the inmate, no physical contact is allowed.

What about an emergency or special visit?

Talk to the officer in charge who can accommodate your request.

Corrections has the authority to deny a visit or suspend visiting privileges for the following reasons:

• insufficient ID;
• inappropriate clothing;
• refusing to submit to a scan or search;
• intoxication;
• loud or unruly behaviour, abusive language, excessive complaining;
• excessive physical contact between visitor and inmate;
• the inmate refuses to see the visitor;
• outstanding charges, warrants or court-ordered restrictions;
• under investigation for illegal activity;
• in possession of contraband;
• negative influence on the rehabilitation of the offender; or
• threat to the security of the correctional centre.

If you're denied visiting privileges

We will provide you with the reason in writing. You can appeal that decision to the superintendent.

How to appeal a decision

1. The visitor or inmate may appeal the suspension or restriction to the superintendent in writing within 14 days of receiving the written letter.
2. The superintendent will review the appeal and provide a response within 14 days of receiving the letter.
