Statement from Premier Pillai on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:

“Monday, September 30, is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day. It is a day to honour the Survivors of residential schools and grieve the loss of the children who never returned home.

“This day weighs heavy on all our hearts. It is a time for Yukoners to come together and stand in solidarity with Survivors, families and communities who continue to be deeply impacted by the painful legacy of residential schools.

“Our government is committed to the ongoing journey of reconciliation. Earlier this week, we flew the Survivors’ Flag in recognition of the lasting impact of the trauma caused by the residential school system.

“The Yukon Residential School Missing Children Project is currently investigating former residential school sites in the Yukon. I thank everyone involved in this crucial work for their efforts to record the history and impacts of the Yukon’s residential schools, and hopefully bring a sense of peace to families. Our government will continue to work in collaboration with Yukon First Nations, the Council of Yukon First Nations and the Government of Canada to support these efforts.

“We also continue to work with Yukon First Nations to implement the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action and the Yukon’s Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2-Spirit+ People Strategy. This is critical to further advance reconciliation and address the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation’s Calls to Action.

"I encourage you to engage with local events that honour this important topic. If you’re able, please consider attending these events to deepen your understanding and support our community in honouring the experiences of these children and families. This reflection can be heavy, and it’s important to acknowledge the weight it carries – especially for those with direct connections to the terrible legacy of residential schools. Let’s remember the importance of looking after one another during this process.

“For those who are struggling, there are many supports available within the territory including Rapid Access Counselling. I encourage Yukoners to check in on each other, take time for learning and healing, and lean on the strength of community.”
