You can cut your tree on:

  • vacant public land outside of municipal boundaries; or
  • specific areas within Whitehorse city limits.

You need to have specific permissions to cut a tree in certain areas. Unless you have permission or authorization, do not cut your tree on:

  • private land; or
  • agricultural leases.

Do not cut your tree on First Nation Settlement Lands unless you have a right to do so.

Do not cut trees on transmission line right-of-ways.

Tree-cutting tips

While looking for your tree, you are encouraged to:

  • use the My Location feature on the interactive map; and
  • confirm you are in an appropriate cutting location.

Leave home ready to cut a tree. Bring:

  • ropes;
  • an axe or saw;
  • tire chains;
  • a first ait kit;
  • a mobile phone; and
  • warm clothing.

Choose a tree you can cut near the base and transport easily. Do not harvest large trees just for their tops.

Protect our forest resources

Make sure you've found the exact tree you want before cutting. Do not cut trees that:

  • are too large to use; or
  • show signs of wildlife nesting or use.

Clean up debris after you’ve cut your tree. Remains on the tree floor can form a fire hazard in the summer.

Caring for your tree

A well-watered tree can last for several weeks and does not lose its needles as fast.

  • Secure your tree so it does not fall.

  • Do not put candles on or near your tree. Keep it well away from woodstoves and other sources of heat.
  • Check for worn light electrical cords. Use CSA-approved electrical decorations and cords. Always unplug at night.
  • LED lights produce less heat, which reduces the speed of the tree drying and lessens the risk of fire.

Recycle your tree

When you’re finished with your tree, recycle it. As part of the City of Whitehorse's curbside collection, the city picks up Christmas trees and turns them into mulch.

Check with the City of Whitehorse's Waste Services to find the curbside collection schedule.
