Find out if you’re eligible
You must:
- be at least 18 years of age;
- have valid ID; and
- have a valid class 5 driver's licence.
Provide proof of identification and residency
Bring 1 document to prove your identity. Bring 2 documents to prove your Yukon residency.
Take the required tests
Knowledge test
- Study the Yukon Commercial Driver’s Handbook and Air Brake Manual Handbook. Descriptions of the class 1 to 4 licence types and their specific requirements are provided in the Yukon Commercial Driver's Handbook.
- Go to the nearest Motor Vehicles office to take the test.
- Pay the $20 test fee by cash, credit card or debit.
- We'll let you know if you pass or fail immediately.
- If you fail your 1st test, you can retake the test the following day. A $20 fee is charged each time you take the test.
Road test
- Contact your nearest Motor Vehicles office to set up an appointment to take your road test.
- Pay the $20 test fee by cash, credit card or debit.
- We'll let you know if you pass or fail immediately.
- If you fail your 1st test, you can retake the test. A $20 fee is charged each time you take the test.
Vision test
- We'll test your vision at the Motor Vehicles office after your road test.
- You may need further vision testing by an optometrist or ophthalmologist, if you do not pass the vision screening. A client service agent will let you know what is needed from this visit.
If you need to wear glasses or contact lenses when you drive, the restriction will be noted on your licence.
Air brakes endorsement test
Some class 1 to 4 licence types require an air brakes endorsement. Check the Yukon Commercial Driver’s Handbook for more details.
- Study the air brakes chapters in the Yukon Driver’s Commercial Handbook.
- Go to your nearest Motor Vehicles office to take the test.
- Pay the $20 test fee by cash, credit card or debit.
- We'll let you know if you pass or fail immediately.
Pass a medical exam
You have to pass a medical exam to determine if you're fit to safely operate a motor vehicle.
- Make an appointment with your doctor to get a medical exam.
- Bring your results to your nearest Motor Vehicles office. All Yukon doctor's offices are supplied with the necessary forms from the Driver's Sanctions Coordinator which will be filled out and given to you to submit.
What happens after you've done the tests?
- Once approved, we will issue you a temporary licence. This is valid for 90 days.
- Pay the $50 licence fee by cash, credit card or debit.
- We'll mail you your driver's licence within 7 to 10 business days.
