Eligibility
- You have been convicted of a Criminal Code impaired driving offence.
- You have served a period of time without your licence. This time is determined based on the number of past impaired driving convictions you have had. Either the Registrar of Motor Vehicles or a judge will generally make this decision.
- You want to re-gain your driving privileges.
Apply
The Driver Control Board makes decisions about who is admitted to the Alcohol Ignition Interlock Program.
- Contact the Driver Control Board coordinator to make an appointment to appear before the board. Email dcb@gov.yk.ca or phone 867-667-5623.
- The Driver Control Board coordinator will book your appointment and let you know what information you will need to provide.
- During the board meeting, the Driver Control Board will review your driving and conviction history to determine whether you qualify for the Alcohol Ignition Interlock Program. Admission to the program is not guaranteed.
- The board will make a decision whether to accept or reject your application.
- After the meeting the board will send you a registered letter to let you know whether you have been accepted and let you know your next steps.
- If your application is rejected, this registered letter will also outline your next steps as well.
After you have enrolled
An alcohol testing device needs to be installed in your vehicle. This device will not allow your vehicle to start or operate if you have consumed alcohol.
The alcohol interlock breath-testing device is available from a private service provider located in Whitehorse. If you live outside Whitehorse, you will need to have the device installed in Whitehorse. The Driver Control Board will provide you with contact information to get the device installed.
The DCB will determine the length of time you will need to spend in the Alcohol Ignition Interlock Program.
You must:
- pay to have an alcohol breath-testing device installed in your vehicle;
- pay to have an alcohol breath-testing device maintained in your vehicle;
- pay all reinstatement fees and any other conditions set out by Motor Vehicles; and
- take a remedial driving course.
Graduate from the program and get your licence back
No alcohol related failures should be recorded on the device for the last 6 months of your program.
If no failures are noted, the Driver Control Board coordinator will contact you and let you know the process to graduate.
After you complete the program, you will receive conditional driving privileges. You will need to adhere to these conditions in order to keep your driving privileges.
