The Health Information Privacy and Management Act (HIPMA) protects your health information and your right to access it.
The government has a responsibility to protect the privacy of your health information. Yukon’s Health Information Privacy and Management Act (HIPMA) sets out rules about how we may collect, use and disclose your health information. These laws enable us to provide you with the right care, in the right place, at the right time, while protecting your privacy.
Heath information is defined as any identifying information of a person that
- relates to the person's health or the provision of health care;
- relates to payment for health care;
- relates to the donation by the individual of any body part, tissue or bodily substance of the individual; or
- is derived from the testing, including genetic testing, or examination of any body part, tissue or bodily substance of the individual.
For example, your health information may include:
- name;
- address;
- phone number;
- health card number;
- physical and mental health history;
- information about tests, procedures and care you received;
- records related to your care;
- hospitalizations and other interactions with the health care system;
- addictions and substance-use history;
- financial information for income tested programs; and
- information about your health care providers.
When you provide your health information to us, we're required to use and disclose it only as permitted by the Act and to keep it secure.
Under HIPMA, you have the right to:
- withhold or withdraw your consent for us to collect, use, and/or disclose your health information in certain situations (for example, other than those expressly permitted under HIPMA).
- Review or receive a copy of your health information.

You have a right to review or receive a copy of your personal health information from Health and Social Services.
