There are 5 groups within the Government of Yukon that provide legal counsel to the government.
Aboriginal Law Group
The Aboriginal Law Group provides legal and policy advice to the Government of Yukon with respect to:
- the negotiation and interpretation of Yukon First Nation Final Agreements;
- the rights of Aboriginal people; and
- other matters relating to Aboriginal law.
Legislative Counsel Office
- Drafts legislation (bills, regulations) on the instructions of Cabinet, in English and in French;
- works with other government entities to ensure that legislation is available; and
- supports the Registrar of Regulations in performing their functions under the Regulations Act.
Litigation Group
Represents and advises client departments in:
- litigation; and
- matters likely to proceed to litigation.
The group appears on behalf of clients before:
- courts;
- administrative tribunals in civil matters;
- territorial prosecutions;
- child protection matters; and
- assists client in attempting to settle disputes outside of court.
The group provides opinion advice and briefings on matters related to their areas of expertise.
Natural Resources and Environmental Law Group
Provides legal services to client departments in the following key areas:
- environmental assessment;
- mining;
- forestry;
- land use and disposition;
- licensing of resource-development activities;
- contaminated sites restoration and rehabilitation;
- parks and protected areas;
- water management; and
- oil and gas.
Legal services provided include:
- advice and legal opinions;
- contract drafting and review;
- legislative development;
- civil litigation; and
- conduct of prosecutions in environmental and natural resources areas.
Solicitors Group
Provides legal advice in the areas of:
- public procurement;
- legislative interpretation;
- health law;
- information and privacy; and
- other specialties such as:
- immigration;
- governance;
- real estate; and
- risk analysis.
