Apply for a security licence

All security agencies and workers in the Yukon must:

  • register;
  • hold a Yukon licence; and
  • renew their licence every year.

Listed below is information on:

  • eligibility;
  • documentation requirements; and
  • fees.

We recommend that you read this information before you apply.

Apply using the online portal

The 4 classes of licences security agencies can hold in the Yukon are:

  • Security guard agency
  • Private investigator agency
  • Security consultant agency
  • Burglar alarm agency

Eligibility

You must meet all of the following requirements.

  • The applicants must be at least 19 years old.
  • The agency must have an office located in the Yukon.
  • The agency must hold a minimum of $100,000 in liability insurance.
  • The agency must hold a bond of $5,000.

Depending on the business type, agencies must also meet 1 of the following requirements.

Sole proprietor

The sole proprietor must have Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status.

Partnership

All partners must have Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status.

Corporation

The majority of the board of directors must have Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status.

Complaints or actions against you

If you've had any complaints or disciplinary or criminal action against you:

  • we'll assess your eligibility on a case-by-case basis; and
  • we may not approve your registration or licensing.

Documents we require

You'll need to provide the following documents with your application. You must provide these in an electronic format such as JPG, PDF or PNG.

What all applicants must provide

  • Your current government-issued photo ID for the agency owner (not a health care card)
    • If applicable, a copy of 1 piece of ID for each business partner and board member
  • Proof of Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status
  • Proof of liability insurance of $100,000 or more
  • Proof of surety bond of $5,000
  • Photos of proposed uniforms, badges, rank insignia or equipment – only security guard agencies must provide this

Fees and payment information

Fees

Annual licence fees
  • 1st licence class: $50
  • Each subsequent licence class: $25 per class

Payment

If we approve your application, we'll email you an invoice for your annual licensing fee. Once you receive this invoice, you can pay through the portal.

Eligibility

  • The applicant must be at least 19 years old.
  • You're an individual employed by a security agency that holds a valid Yukon licence.

Complaints or actions against you

  • we'll assess your eligibility on a case-by-case basis; and
  • we may not approve your registration or licensing.

Documents we require

You'll need to provide the following documents with your application. You must provide these in an electronic format such as JPG, PDF or PNG.

All applicants

  • Current government-issued photo ID for the agency owner (not a health care card)
  • Proof of Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status
  • Your criminal record check
  • Passport sized photograph of a recent image of yourself
  • Authorization to carry firearms (you only need this if you'll work for an armoured car service)
  • Canine supporting documentation (you only need this if you'll be working with dogs)

Fees and payment information

Fees

Annual licence fee: $10 per licence class

Payment

If we approve your application, we'll email you an invoice for your $10 annual licensing fee. Once you receive this invoice, you can pay through the portal.

For all licence types

  1. Create a profile. With your profile you'll be able to:
    • log in to the portal at any time;
    • upload documents;
    • view your registration information; and
    • apply for a licence.
  2. Apply for a licence.
    • Follow the steps after you click on "Apply for a licence" under the "Licensing" tab.
  3. Refer to information on this page if needed.

Tips

  • You do not have to submit an application to create a profile on the portal.
  • Prepare your documents ahead of time. Save them first as digital files so that they're ready to upload when you apply.
  • You can take a picture of a document with your mobile device to submit it as a digital document.
