All licensed security agencies and workers in the Yukon must:
- register;
- hold a Yukon licence; and
- renew their licence every year.
Listed below is information on:
- eligibility;
- the documentation you'll need to provide to renew; and
- fees.
We recommend reviewing this information before you apply to renew your licence.
Renewal period
The renewal period begins February 1. Apply for your renewal by March 1. This ensures we can process your licence before it expires on March 31.
It's illegal to do business or work in the new licence year before we've renewed your licence.
Processing time
We typically review applications within 30 business days. We'll confirm you've met all the legal requirements before we issue your licence.
We cannot process your application if you have not provided us with all the documentation we need.
There are 4 classes of licenses security agencies can hold in the Yukon:
- Security guard agency
- Private investigator agency
- Security consultant agency
- Burglar alarm agency
Eligibility
You can apply to renew your security agency’s licence if the agency holds a current Yukon security agency licence.
Additional documents
When you renew online you must also provide us with:
- proof of liability insurance of $100,000 or more; and
- proof of surety bond of $5,000.

Fees and payment
Annual licence fee: $25 per licence class
If we approve your application, we'll email you an invoice for your $25 annual licensing fee. Once you receive this invoice, you can pay through the portal.
There are 4 classes of licenses security workers can hold in the Yukon:
- Security guard
- Private investigator
- Security consultant
- Burglar alarm agent
Eligibility
You’re eligible to renew a licence if:
- you hold a current security worker licence in the Yukon; and
- you're currently employed by a security agency that holds a valid Yukon agency licence.
Additional documents
You must also provide us with the following when you renew online:
- Your criminal record check – we require a new check every year)
- A passport-sized photograph or a recent image of yourself – we require new a new photo every 5 years
- Authorization to carry firearms – you only need this if you'll work for an armoured car service
- Canine supporting documentation – you only need this if you'll be working with dogs

Fees and payment
Annual licence fee: $10 per licence class
If we approve your application, we'll email you an invoice for your $10 annual licensing fee. Once you receive this invoice, you can pay through the portal.
